About me.

Hello! My name is Lauren Maggi (she/her) and I am a midwifery student at Midwives College of Utah and a passionate doula & birth photographer. I started at MCU in January 2023, and am currently in a clinical placement with a phenomenal homebirth midwife in the Quad Cities. I have been working as a birth photographer since 2017 and hold my Bachelor in the Arts from Illinois State University with a major in photography and a minor in art history. My interest in birthwork ignited with the birth of my first child in 2016, which inspired me to start taking photos in the birthing space in 2017. After having my third child at a freestanding birth center, my knowledge of physiologic birth grew exponentially which cultivated even more enthusiasm for supporting families through their journeys into parenthood. My husband and I live in Central Illinois with our three children – nothing brings me more joy than being a part of families’ stories and accompanying them on their special moments!

My practice philosophy.

As a student midwife, I believe that every birthing person deserves to be supported in their decisions and needs during their pregnancy, birth, and postpartum journey. My philosophy focuses on true autonomy of care, where the individual is empowered to make informed decisions that align with their values, preferences, and goals.

At the core of my practice, I prioritize trust and respect within the birth space. I recognize the importance of creating an environment where the individual feels safe and heard, and where their unique needs and experiences are acknowledged and validated. This requires active listening, open communication, and a deep understanding of their cultural background, beliefs, and experiences.

In addition to promoting autonomy and trust, I also prioritize evidence-based practice and continuous learning. As a student midwife, it is my responsibility to stay up-to-date with the latest research and provide the individual with accurate, unbiased information to support their decision-making process.

I am committed to providing holistic and personalized care that addresses the individual's physical, mental, and emotional well-being. This includes creating a care plan that aligns with their values and preferences, providing education and resources that empower them to make informed decisions, and supporting their emotional needs before, during, and after birth.

Overall, my philosophy prioritizes the individual's autonomy, trust, respect, evidence-based practice, continuous learning, and holistic care. I believe that by promoting these values, I can help create a positive and empowering birth experience for every individual and their family.
